Graphic design is a general approach to visual communication that leaves no skill unused. Without claiming any particular specialization, graphic designers can cover the entire graphic arts spectrum: publishing, visual identity, poster art, advertising, multimedia, and so on. The art of page layout, typographical choices and visuals are at the heart of this profession, in which photographers and illustrators play a part as well.
Independent graphic designers have a place of their own in the communication market, even though it is difficult to quantify. It is increasingly common to see them secure a position on big budget projects, either as competitors or a complement to major agencies. The trend began a few years ago and is becoming even more marked today.
